Seiring perubahan yang ingin digulirkan di Unhas mengenai penghapusan POZMA dan segala protes dari mahasiswa, rasanya sangat perlu kita meluaskan pandangan sejenak
untuk melihat keluar dan sedikit membandingkan (walaupun kita tidak bisa meniru seratus persen-- karena ada perbedaan) proses orientasi mahasiswa baru yang dilaksanakan di negeri lain.
Dalam bulan July, indigelar Orientation Program buat mahasiswa baru di Universitas Adelaide.
Alhamdulillah, tahun ini, saya terpilih sebagai salah satu peer mentor (mungkin
seperti panitia opspek). Ini saya syukuri karena dulu pengen sekali jadi panitia POZMA tapi nama saya dicoret karena ga pernah ikut rapat2 waktu itu. Pernah juga masuk steering committee POZMA tapi dibubarkan senat karena "gerombolan senior dari Jasbog"protes ama pembaharuan yang kita lakukan. Kecewa sih, tapi bersyukur karena tangan saya tak perlu kotor dengan apa yang namanya POZMA.
Di University of Adelaide, proses orientasi mahasiswa baru dilakukan sama seperti "bertamasya" namun serius karena bermanfaat. Tidak ada ketakutan malah mahasiswa diberi kesempatan untuk rilex, ngopi, dengering musik, dan ngobrol2.
Di kampus, digelar Welcome Center. Mahasiswa baru datang untuk mendaftar dan mendapatkan paket yang berisi booklet, informasi2 yang berkaitan dengan kuliah dan kemahasiswaan, termasuk kartu mahasiswa, username dan password untuk komputer, dan asuransi kesehatan. Di sini, mahasiswa baru (maba) juga melihat2 workshop dan kegiatan2 yang mereka bisa ikuti. Semuanya tidak wajib kecuali arrival briefing wajib. Mereka dilayani oleh para peer mentor (semuanya mahasiswa), dan staf dari rektorat.
Workshop itu ada banyak macam seperti Bagaimana proses pendaftaran, Motivasi Goal Setting dan Manajemen Waktu, pengenalan terhadap On-Line Service, Tour perpustakaan, Tour Campus, Lecture Theatre Tour, Pengenalan mengenai lingkungan universitas, menulis effektif, presentasi seminar dan diskusi kelas, dan bagaimana mengatur uang. workshop dilakukan di beberapa kelas dengan jumlah peserta maksimal 25 orang. jadi ada banyak kelas dan dilakukan dalam 2 minggu selama orientasi.
Selain workshop yang sedikit serius, ada juga sekedar having fun. Seperti menonton film "10 Canoes", Pizza and Games, Welcome BBQ, Wisata ke Victor Harbour, menonton Australian Rules Football, dan jalan2 ke Marion Shopping Centre.
Semua workshop bisa diikuti tanpa biaya apapun (mungkin karena udah dicover oleh "uang masuk") kecuali untuk wisata ke Victor Harbour dengan biaya sangat murah $5.
Semua berjalan tanpa ada ketakutan, teriakan, kontak fisik. Mungkin karena pihak universitas melihat maba sebagai aset membangun peradaban.
Semoga kita bisa memanfaatkan contoh mereka.
